Last Sunday we encountered the kind of contrast between the beautiful and the ugly that you seldom see in one day.
We had heard about the Butterfly House in Navarre, which opens only a few weeks a year.
So we decided to stop by on the way to the beach.
The Butterfly House is a way station to the monarch butterfly, which migrates from its breeding place to overwintering sites in Mexico. This species is said to stop in the same place each year, often even the same tree.
These are Zebra Swallowtail caterpillars:
We saw trees and bushes covered with butterflies.
It's amazing how beautiful these little creatures are.
Here are some other animals we found at the Navarre park.
And then we made the short drive across the bridge to the beach. On leaving the car in the parking lot we started coughing and wondered what was going on. When we made it down to the beach we found brown water and dead fish and realized it was caused by red tide. How ugly!
