Moving out

Volkmar seemed to be dreaming of bigger and more wonderful places than his nest and our flowerpot, so he stretched his little wings and went for it. His first little journey took him up to the hook of the flower basket, where after regaining his balance and learning how to fold and store his wings again he sat quite proud of himself. Flying down again he lost his balance but landed soft and safe among the flowers. After a few practice flights and long periods of staring out into the distance in between, he got up all his courage and flew away.
Below you see him sitting on the hook with his mother underneath watching.

I looked for him but didn't find him until hours later when I saw a bird flying very close to our bedroom window. Evidently Volkmar's parents had found him in the bushes and were feeding him. He wasn't able to fly back to the nest, we believe, but also not capable of finding his own food, so his parents watched over him and fed him where he was. Their firstborn seemed to sink deeper into the bushes at times and than fly up again, still very uncoordinated.
Below you see Volkmar in his new place (still supported by his parents).

All the pictures are taken through windows to not interfere, so they are not as sharp as we would like them to be.

  2. The Cowbird is another brood parasite, laying its eggs in unsuspecting host nests. I googled images of Cowbird babies, and they looked really similar to Volkmar, especially the beak. It'll be interesting to see what he looks like when he's bigger.
